US President Donald Trump has said he is willing to accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections, congratulating Democrats on their victories after Republicans suffered significant losses in races across the country.
In a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged the Democrats’ performance, saying they had campaigned hard and deserved recognition for their electoral success.
Trump congratulates Democrats
Speaking after the election results became clear, Trump adopted a conciliatory tone towards his political opponents, praising their campaign efforts.
“The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard,” Trump said during the interview.
The president also indicated that he was prepared to work with Democrats, despite the political differences between the two parties.
President rejects personal responsibility for defeat
Despite acknowledging the Republican losses, Trump rejected the suggestion that the midterm results represented a direct rejection of his presidency.
He argued that the outcome should be viewed within the broader context of American midterm elections, maintaining that his administration had achieved significant results during its time in office.
Trump also suggested that individual Republican candidates should take responsibility for their electoral performances rather than attributing the outcome entirely to his administration.
Iran war and rising fuel prices emerge as factors
During the telephone interview, Trump acknowledged that the war involving Iran may have contributed to the Republican Party’s electoral difficulties.
However, he placed particular emphasis on rising petrol prices, arguing that voters were concerned about the financial consequences of the conflict.
He suggested that although many Americans supported his approach towards Iran, higher fuel costs may have influenced their decisions at the ballot box.
Democrats gain control of Congress
The 2026 midterm elections resulted in a major shift in the balance of power in Washington, with Democrats securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The outcome will significantly affect the final two years of Trump’s presidency, giving the opposition party greater influence over legislation, government oversight and congressional investigations.
With Democrats set to control both chambers of Congress, Trump’s administration faces a more challenging political environment as it seeks to advance its legislative agenda.
The president’s comments signal his willingness to acknowledge the election outcome, even as he continues to defend his administration’s record and reject the interpretation that the results amount to a personal political defeat.
